Hamilton Zinefest Market - Review

On May 11th, I attended ‘Hamilton Zinefest Market’ which took place at the Meteor between 10 am and 3 pm. The market was held as a part of an annual two-day fanzine festival which has been running in Hamilton for six years with three events held over the duration. The Hamilton Zinefest is a chance for artists, writers and publishers from across the world to meet in Hamilton and showcase their talents and work. As noted on their social media event, the Hamilton Zinefest Market promised over fifty creators stall’s with a diverse range of comics, poetry, drawings etc on sale and prices ranging from $0 to $20. In addition to this, there were some presentations from important public figures within the zine community. According to the Project Management Body Of Knowledge guidelines, ten knowledge areas need to be considered and affected to have a project be successful. For, ‘Hamilton Zinefest Market’ Panel the knowledge area that I believed to be the most vital for planning this event was Project Risk Management and Project Schedule/Time Management.

Project Schedule/Time Management

Schedule Management is organising a timeline for planning a project. It involves creating a schedule for when each aspect of a project needs to be completed. As The Zinefest Market is an annual event held in conjunction with the festival, the project managers would have needed to discuss and then confirm a date. From my research, the Zinefest is always held on a weekend between the 10th and 13th of May though the actual dates depend on when the weekend actually comes. For example, this year the Market was held on Saturday the 11th, but in 2018 it was on May 12th. In order to host so many stalls, the Market would need to be held in a venue big enough to accommodate this. The Zinefest Market was first held at the Meteor and giving that it is an annual event, the project managers may have some sort of yearly agreement with the management team at the Meteor. Doing this could limit the risk of needing to make a last-minute venue change. With a project like this, it is important to make sure progress is running smoothly in both the project management team, but also zine artists/contributors, the venue, speakers and the Rosie Food Truck, which was parked at the rear. While the market was a part of the zinefest, it was the responsibility of the artists to manage themselves - besides being allotted a table, everything else was done by the stallholders. Attendees were told in advance that it would be cash sales only, and this meant there were no issues with purchasing on the day. The Zinefest Market was clearly a very relaxed event, but the project management team successfully put the work in with time management and scheduling to make sure this would be the case.

Project Risk Management

As the market was such a laidback event, this could have worked against the project managers if there was anything inflammatory or offensive out on the tables for all the visitors to see. From my experience, it was clear how much diversity was celebrated in the zinefest - there were stalls with artists ranging from primary school age to retirees. While there was no documentation I could find during my research that states that the artists who had more explicit works needed to keep these out of sight/were not allowed to sell these items, almost all of the stallholders who had this sort of content propped an “R18” warning on their stalls. This eliminated the risk of parents who had brought their children, or those who had young children selling their goods from getting upset. While Risk Management may not have been one of the areas that needed the largest amounts of attention, it was clearly considered, which meant it contributed to the overall success and helped maintain a positive experience for the guests and vendors.
