Kiwi Flies to New Heights Thanks to Working Holiday

In many ways, the big ‘overseas experience’ or working holiday is a right of passage to New Zealanders.

Jack Williamson is no exception and has been working on the Canadian Ski Slopes in Whistler since November 2017.

The twenty-two-year-old had recently finished a Bachelor's degree in physics and was in need of ongoing employment.

After plenty of research, Jack soon found the Working Holiday Club, an international company who specialises in finding overseas employment for Australian and New Zealanders.

The Working Holiday Club offers programmes in the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States and Canada, with guarantees of "providing life-changing experiences to youths across the globe."

Jack Williamson is loving his working holiday in Whistler

With a preexisting love for skiing, Jack began the application process, which he described as being "really easy," even going as far as saying "Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort is constantly understaffed, so they'll often take what they can get."

When asked about whether he found the process of working through a company in order to find employment valuable, Jack said that it while it "would have been ideal to save the $800 fee and cut out the middleman" he thought it'd be "pretty much impossible" to find

employment without being in Canada and able to attend a hiring fair.

With the Canadian ski season coming to a close, Jack has been offered further employment in working lift operator for tourists who wish to view the mountain in the summer, and possibly even work for the next winter season also.

Jack has found the experience well worth it, saying that he would encourage anyone who is interested to pursue it. "I barely even consider it to be working - it's definitely a holiday."
